Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
– Calvin Coolidge
Persistence is one of the essential ingredients for success.
What Is Persistence?
Persistence is the ability to continue to move toward your goal regardless of your perceived ability at that particular moment to reach it and maintain a course of action regardless of your feelings in that moment.
You keep taking the steps, sometimes small baby steps, sometimes giant leaps forward and you know what in my experience sometimes from a place that sees you sitting on your butt scratching your head!
You keep going even though you feel like giving up.
Big goals take time and your motivation and inspiration will ebb and flow like the metaphor of “the confrontation of the stream and the rock, the stream always wins, not through strength, but through persistence”,
Action though will be the ingredient that produces results, yes motivation and inspiration gets you to action as does being sat on your butt, I believe it’s important to know the difference and choose the process that achieves the result with the least amount of pain and discomfort.
A good time to reconsider the concept “No pain, No gain” and evolve it to something that achieves with grace and ease.
Both will get you where you want to go!
Persistence will ultimately become it’s own inspiration and motivation. To continue to take action you can only get a result, now depending on your preferred experience and your ability to keep doing what provided that preferred experience you are developing a success model. Even by choosing action that sits you on your butt, you still have produced a result, now it’s up to you to apply the definition of insanity – i.e “continue to do the same thing and get the same result” as you can see this is a successful model for action, you DO need to choose it’s application wisely though!
When to Give Up
Is success only about continued persistence? Absolutely not.
Sometimes giving up is clearly the best option. So how do you know when to persist and when to give up?
What is my intention for the goal.
Will this action take me closer to or further away from my goal?
Does my plan need a review, do I need an update
Is there another way that I can achieve my goal?
Remember there is no honour in holding onto something that clearly is not working. Stubbornness is not Persistence.
